FROM THE GROUND UP
Building your asphalt drive or parking lot:
- Determine proper course of adequate drainage and usability of drive or lot. (Proper drainage is
a must to obtain maximum life expectancy of your asphalt. Usability will make you smile and keep you from cursing.)
- Remove and dispose of vegetation along with unsuitable subsoils (i.e., clay, marrow, muck,
deteriorated asphalt.)
- Place or use existing draining subsoils. (Placing more asphalt, or thicker base materials will not
always guarantee longevity if placed on unsuitable sub base.)
- Install base material (see Typical Cross Section Applications link). Most commonly used is road
gravel of 22A or 21AA specifications, crushed stone/concrete is also an option. Base must be a compactable product to ensure a dense, hard base for your asphalt. Confucious say "Asphalt only as good as base it's put upon".
- Placement of asphalt: Thickness of your asphalt is based on traffic usage, residential or
commercial location, and weight of vehicles using it. (See Typical Cross Section Applications link).
- Care and maintenance of your asphalt investment. Edging, sealing, etc. (See Maintaining New
Asphalt link).
